Maybe I need new glasses, but I have a hard time telling if the boring American car behind me is a cop with a low-profile light bar or a generic commutermobile with the sunroof popped.
In California, whether it was CHP or local cops, everyone drove Crown Vics - easy to spot from a mile away. Now that I'm Missouri I can't tell which cars belong to the rozzers and which are harmless. No tickets so far, thankfully...

its getting harder to tell now. Seems that all car profiles are similar.

I've actually memorized the headlight pattern of the new Taurus, and I always get annoyed when it's just a civilian one. Minor heart attacks for no reason.

I think light bars extend fully across the roof of the car, whereas a sunroof opening only extends, well, about as wide as a sunroof would.

Punch it and find out ...

Now that every cop isn't a P71 or Impala, I can't tell sometimes either. Sucks. My cop senses were so expertly honed.

My senses were as well, except one particular evening approaching downtown LA on the 5. I was dicing with a guy in a CV, so when I saw one come up behind me at speed I thought it was him. Wrong, very wrong. And that's when I learned that the particular stretch of the 5 that I was on was posted 55 MPH, not 65. Double oops. Left the house late that morning to get to a training class an hour away and as a result got stuck in rush hour(s) traffic and was sandwiched in the middle of a multicar pileup that made the morning news and caused enough damage, albeit nearly all cosmetic, that came close to totalling out my car. Had to rush back to work that evening because my idiot backup admin didn't replace the failed drive in the server array that I had repeatedly asked him to take care of in my absence when another one went down, taking down the CEO's personal server.
It was not a good day.

the worst for me is seeing some kid in a old crown vic, with the alley light still on. Some kid who I went to high school with bought one, and started to pull people over. I heard he pulled a off duty officer over...
